Our Vision

Spirit of the Sea Objective:

To establish an all inclusive maritime and marine-themed community event for the borough of Weymouth and Portland which will attract international participants and visitors and act as an economic and social legacy of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic sailing events.

Aims that support the objective:

To establish 'Spirit of the Sea' as an annual maritime festival of excellence in Weymouth and Portland and to secure its long term future legacy.
To attract, develop, enhance and support a variety of marine sports and activities being performed by world-class participants.
To provide an opportunity for the local and visiting community to participate in a diverse range of sports and beach/ water-based activities; and annually increase the level of involvement year on year.
To attract national and international sports boat, sailboat and sailboard classes, as well as all types of pleasure sailing craft, to some of the best sailing waters in the world.
To attract, develop, support and deliver a dynamic shore based programme of cultural and sporting activities centred on maritime and marine themes.
To promote and showcase the local element of the nationally and internationally renowned World Heritage Site, the Jurassic Coast, highlighting its unique geology, fauna and flora both above and below water.
To promote and showcase the maritime archaeology and heritage of the Borough.
To enhance the quality of life of the Borough’s community.
To increase the number of visitors through event participants and spectators therefore having a significant positive annual economic impact on the Borough’s economy.
To contribute towards the objectives of the 12 for 2012 Legacy action plan for Dorset – “Weymouth & Portland to become a Centre of International Marine and Leisure Excellence”.
To manage, develop and generate positive local, regional, national and international publicity and promotion for 'Spirit of the Sea' and to present the distinctiveness of the Borough of Weymouth & Portland through active marketing of the Festival.
To seek and raise financial support for the promotion and delivery of 'Spirit of the Sea' through grants, sponsorship or similar.
For each of the independent event organiser contributing to ' Spirit of the Sea' to annually undertake an agreed evaluation survey and appraisal of their Festival activities to ascertain whether the above objective and aims have been reached.
